Dr. Carla M. Harwell is the Medical Director of University Hospitals Otis Moss Jr. Health Center located in an urban area of Cleveland, the Fairfax community, offering primary care services to many residents in both Cleveland and the greater Cleveland community. There she has a special interest in eliminating health care disparities that exist in that African American community. She teaches both medical students and residents at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, where she also serves as an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency program. Dr. Harwell received a Bachelor of Sciences in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. She then went on to attend medical school at that same institution earning her MD degree. A Cleveland native, Dr. Harwell returned to her home town for internship and residency training at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center where she graduated with honors. She gives lectures at community churches, health fairs and schools. She has served on numerous boards including the medical advisory board of Minority Tissue/Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP) and the American Cancer Society. She has worked with the NAACP’s Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, the Racial & Ethnic Disparities in Health Care Task Force and the 11th Congressional District Health Advisory Task Force. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including national ranking as a Top Doc by U.S. News and World Report for over 10 years in a row, being named in Who’s Who in Black Cleveland, honored by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health for her dedication to decreasing health disparities among African Americans in the state of Ohio and beyond, the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Inc.’s Professional Award, Southern Christian Leadership Council, Cleveland Chapter, Martin Luther King Jr., Community Leadership Award, YWCA Woman of Professional Excellence Award, and numerous others. In 2020 she was honored by Crain’s Magazine Cleveland as a Woman of Note.
